Tips for using your green cart this fall

  • Yard waste like leaves, branches, grass, and plants can go directly inside the green cart.
  • Always fill your green cart first, then fill paper yard waste bags. Roll tops of bags closed to prevent spills and allow your collector to pick up the bags.
  • Place extra yard waste bags at least two feet to the side of your green cart for collection. Make sure you can lift the bag with one hand.
  • Do not use plastic bags in your green cart.

Starting in November, the City will pick up your green cart once every other week. Weekly green cart collection will resume in the spring.

Answer: Tree removals and pruning is proactively identified the previous fall. The planned work is then shared with contractors and staff via GIS maps and can be completed anytime throughout the season, rather than within a specific time period. This gives a scheduling opportunity to contractors and results in greatly improved unit rate pricing (cost-savings for tax payers). We can accurately share how many trees will receive work, but it is not possible to share exact timing.

We are also working with our internal colleagues in Geospatial Business Solutions to create a public facing map outlining all operational tree work scheduled for the season. We hope this is a useful tool for Ward offices and Calgarians to get a sense of what work they can expect in their communities. It will increase awareness and hopefully decrease 311 calls over time. No date on when this will be completed, but aiming to have it before Q3.

Our urban forestry team will commit to investigating matching removals in 2024 with replacement trees in 2025. However, please note that replacements are not always possible in the same locations due to utility conflicts plus updated specifications, guidelines, and setbacks; however, we will do our best to find alternate locations in the community.

Schedule for McKenzie Towne:
362 trees scheduled for pruning in 2024
15 trees scheduled for removal in 2024
35 stumps will be ground out in 2024
Trees planned for installation = 14

Speed Reductions coming to Prestwick (posted on December 19, 2023):

Due to concerns raised by several local residents regarding speeding around the Splash Park on Prestwick Blvd, the City of Calgary completed a Safety Review. The results are;

  • Prestwick Blvd SE will be added to the Collector Speed Reduction Pilot
  • Prestwick Blvd SE will be reduced to 40 km/h from 50 km/h. An evaluation will be completed to observe the impacts of this reduction. After the evaluation process, further improvements will be implemented if required.
  • Prestwick CI SE, Prestwick DR SE & Prestwick AV SE will also be reduced to 40 km/h based on our speed limit reduction review.”

It is hoped that temporary signage will be up in the next couple of months, and permanent signage up in the spring/summer. The area will remain on the list for a Community Speed Watch in the spring/summer season.
